Quenlingburg, Germany '99 We had visited with Mathilde in Hamm, Germany. She recommended we visit Hameln, the Hartz Mountains and Quedlingburg located in East Germany. That became our plan. We arrived in Hameln by noon to see the play of the Pied Piper, as the author was from this town. In the Hartz Mountains we stayed in Quenlingburg. We visited several of the schloss on the scenic mountain sides. We walked the old cobblestone streets of the towns. Very few people in this area spoke English. We found the bohnof and rode the last steep section of the train ride up the mountain. The locals were in their hiking clothes with picnics. We heard about witches flying through the area. The farms were very well kept, but the industry under communist rule had depreciated. |
